John Gilbert
John offers over four decades of experience as an environmental engineering practitioner, business leader, and consultant. His background includes over 20 years of senior level business management and leadership as founder/CEO of an environmental engineering firm that he grew to $10MM in revenue and 60 staff in three offices, serving clients in the northeastern United States and nationally. He led strategic planning and operational execution, as well as business development, efforts and designed and implemented an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, and successfully implemented an internal ownership transfer.
John partners with for‑profit and non-profit businesses to improve sales, profitability performance, financial stability, sustainability, and other critical operational issues. He has advised business leaders in overcoming serious business challenges and in bringing businesses to scale for acquisition. He has worked with businesses involved in professional and B2B services, private equity investing, manufacturing, hospitality, property management, IT/cybersecurity, construction, and SaaS. He has served on numerous non-profit and for-profit business boards in capacities that include Board Chair and as chair or a member of audit, finance, compensation, development, and program committees. He has considerable experience with ESOP-owned companies, serving in operational leadership and as a board member.
In non-profit businesses, he has extensive experience and expertise in strategic planning, board leadership, governance, organizational and financial management issues in difficult economic environments and has twice served as Interim Executive Director. He has worked with organizations involved in health and elder care, domestic violence crisis intervention and prevention, affordable housing, community action, veterans support services, and economic development agencies
John currently serves on the Executive Board of the Business & Industry Association of New Hampshire. He served as Chair of the Board of the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits, NH Audubon, and CATCH Neighborhood Housing and on the Boards of Leadership New Hampshire, the Krempels Brain Injury Center, and Alliance Asset Management, Inc. In addition, he formerly chaired the New Hampshire Water Council and the Governor’s Commission on Water Sustainability.
John earned a B.A. with honors from Williams College and an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Tufts University. He is a 1998 graduate of Leadership New Hampshire and served as a facilitator and presenter of the Environment Day in that program for several years. He has lectured at Franklin & Marshall College and Southern New Hampshire University on environmental and business management topics, respectively.
